Tree Removal in South Orange County

A dead eucalyptus, a palm too close to the house, roots lifting the driveway: some trees have to come out. We connect you with licensed, insured local tree professionals who quote and handle the removal.

Referral service. Work is done by independent CSLB-licensed providers.

Signs a tree may need to come out

  • Large dead sections, or a tree that did not leaf out this season.
  • A new or worsening lean, cracked soil or lifted roots on one side.
  • Deep cracks, cavities, or fungus at the base of the trunk.
  • Small round holes, staining or gumming on the bark. Invasive shothole borers have spread through Southern California landscapes and can kill many common trees (see UC IPM's shothole borer guide).
  • Roots damaging foundations, walls, pools or sewer lines with no practical fix that saves the tree.

Not every problem tree needs removal. An ISA Certified Arborist can tell you whether pruning, cabling or treatment would do. Ask for an assessment if you are unsure.

How a residential removal usually goes

  1. Walk-through and written quote covering the tree, how it comes down, stump work and debris haul-off.
  2. Permit and HOA check. Some trees need a city permit (San Juan Capistrano is the strictest of the cities we cover) and most HOAs want an architectural or landscape request first. See the permit guide.
  3. Sectional removal. On tight South OC lots, trees are usually climbed and lowered in pieces with ropes, or picked with a crane, instead of being felled in one piece.
  4. Cleanup and stump. Chipping and haul-off, then optional stump grinding.

What removal costs

Published Orange County figures run from about $500 to $2,200 per tree, averaging around $1,300 (HomeBlue), with large or hard-to-reach trees costing several thousand dollars more. An Orange County contractor's 2026 guide puts most commercial and HOA removals at $600 to $3,500 and large mature trees at $2,500 to $6,000+ (Joylawn). Full details are in the cost guide.

Licensing to ask about

In California, tree removal on a job worth $1,000 or more (labor and materials), or a smaller job that needs a permit or uses hired workers, has to be done by a contractor licensed by the CSLB (CSLB on the $1,000 minor-work limit). For tree work that usually means the C-49 Tree and Palm classification, which CSLB created in 2024 to replace the older D-49 Tree Service class (existing D-49 holders may keep working under it), or the C-27 Landscaping classification. Before anyone starts, look the license number up on CSLB's free license check and ask for a certificate of insurance that shows liability and workers' compensation coverage.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove a tree on my own property without a permit?

Often yes for private residential trees, but not always. San Juan Capistrano requires a permit for heritage trees and for trees in front yards and street-facing side or rear yards, and every city controls trees in the public right-of-way. HOAs usually need to approve removals too. Start with our permit guide.

Is stump grinding included in tree removal?

Not always. Stump grinding is often priced separately. Ask for it to be listed on the quote along with debris haul-off.

Will homeowners insurance pay to remove a tree?

Coverage depends on your policy and why the tree came down. If a tree has hit the house, call your insurer before cleanup so an adjuster can document the damage.

Who actually removes the tree?
