Historic trees in a historic town

San Juan Capistrano grew up around Mission San Juan Capistrano, founded in 1776, and the Los Rios Historic District. Large, old trees are part of the town's character, and the City protects several species as heritage trees. Larger lots, equestrian properties and the creek corridors along San Juan and Trabuco creeks add larger trees to the usual yard palms, so check the heritage species list below before planning work on a big tree.

When San Juan Capistrano requires a Tree Removal Permit

According to the City's official FAQ, a Tree Removal Permit is required for:

  • Any tree on non-residential property.
  • Any tree within HOA-maintained landscape.
  • On residential property, a tree in the front yard, or in a side or rear yard that abuts a street or trail.
  • Any heritage tree.

The City counts a tree as a self-supporting woody plant with a trunk at least 6 inches across measured 3 feet above the ground; smaller trees do not need a permit. A heritage tree has a trunk 36 inches or more across at 3 feet above ground and is one of these species: California pepper (Schinus molle), oak, cedar, blue gum eucalyptus, walnut, olive, sycamore or cottonwood. The Planning Commission can also designate a tree as heritage. Applications go to the Planning Division; the form is on the City's Forms & Guidelines page.

Planning a removal in SJC? Ask the provider to measure the trunk 3 feet above grade and confirm the species before anything is cut.

Wind, creeks and fire

Inland canyons and the Ortega Highway corridor see Santa Ana winds, while creek-side trees can be undercut by winter flows. San Juan Capistrano is an OCFA member city; properties near open space should follow OCFA's vegetation management guidance.
