Dana Point's trees

Palms are everywhere in Dana Point, from the harbor and Pacific Coast Highway to private yards in Capistrano Beach, Niguel Shores and the Lantern District. The City itself maintains about 8,400 city trees; it trims city palms once a year and other city trees every two to three years (City of Dana Point Parks FAQ). Private yards add a wide mix of other trees.

Bluffs, salt and views

  • Coastal exposure: salt spray and constant onshore breeze on the Headlands, Monarch Beach and the Capistrano Beach bluffs.
  • Views: on ocean-view lots, a lot of trimming is about keeping sight lines open without topping the tree.
  • Slopes: hillside lots can mean harder access, which raises the price of trimming and removal.

City trees vs. your trees

Dana Point's municipal code (Title 13, §13.04.050 and §13.04.060) makes it unlawful to cut, transplant or remove any tree in a park, median, public right-of-way or City facility without written authorization from the City Manager or designee. The City's Parks FAQ says residents may not trim or remove a City tree without a City permit, and requests go to the Parks Division. The City's tree removal policy FAQ also lists reasons that are not valid grounds for removing a City tree, including a messy tree and a blocked view.

The City tree rules above cover parks, medians, the right-of-way and City facilities. For a tree fully on private property, ask the City before removal; HOA and coastal-area rules may still apply. See South OC tree permits.

Fire season

Dana Point is an OCFA member city. Homes near canyons and open space should follow OCFA's vegetation management guidance and keep dry palm fronds cleaned out.
