What grows in San Clemente yards
San Clemente is the southernmost city in Orange County, bordering San Diego County and Camp Pendleton. Its older neighborhoods near the pier and downtown grew up around the city's Spanish Colonial Revival plan from the 1920s, and their mature trees reflect that era: tall Mexican fan palms, Canary Island date palms and other large, mature trees on older lots. Inland tracts such as Talega, Forster Ranch and Rancho San Clemente are newer and lean toward HOA-planted street and slope trees.
Coast and canyon conditions
- Salt air and marine layer on west-facing lots near the beach.
- Canyon and slope lots in the eastern neighborhoods, where open space meets backyards. These are the places to think about fire season and slope stability.
- Santa Ana winds in fall and winter, which hit tall palms and top-heavy trees from the east.
San Clemente's street-tree and clearance rules
San Clemente's municipal code (Chapter 12.24) makes property owners responsible for maintaining their own trees next to streets, sidewalks and trails, with at least 8 feet of clearance over sidewalks and 13 feet over the street measured from the top of the curb. The City handles major pruning of designated street trees, and residents may not prune or top those street trees themselves. Any work in the public right-of-way, including landscaping and tree removal, needs an encroachment permit from the City's engineering section.
The City rules above cover street trees and work in the right-of-way. For a large tree fully on private property, ask the City before removal; your HOA's rules may still apply. Details: South OC tree permits.
Fire season
San Clemente is an OCFA member city. Homes along canyons and open space should follow OCFA's vegetation management guidance: clear dead plants, keep tree limbs well above shrubs, and keep palm skirts cleaned. Check your address on CAL FIRE's fire hazard severity zone map.

Frequently asked questions
Can I trim the street tree in front of my San Clemente home?
Not the major pruning. San Clemente's code puts major pruning of designated street trees on the City and bars residents from pruning or topping them, though owners handle basic ground-level upkeep and watering. Contact the City about street-tree work.
How much clearance does San Clemente require over sidewalks?
Chapter 12.24 calls for at least 8 feet of vertical clearance over sidewalks, trails and parkways and 13 feet over the street, measured from the top of the curb.
