Tree Trimming & Removal in Mission Viejo

Mission Viejo was planned from the start with tree-lined streets, slopes and greenbelts, and many of those trees are now decades old. We connect Mission Viejo homeowners and associations with licensed, insured local tree professionals.

A planned city with a mature canopy

Mission Viejo was developed as a master-planned community in the 1960s and incorporated in 1988. Neighborhoods such as Lake Mission Viejo, Casta del Sol, Aegean Hills and Pacific Hills were built with landscaped slopes and greenbelts. According to the City of Mission Viejo, the Mission Viejo Company landscaped all slopes and medians and planted over 1 million trees and shrubs, including sycamore, California pepper and pine, along with olive, palm and jacaranda trees.

Inland conditions

  • Hotter, drier summers than the coastal cities, which stresses shallow-rooted and drought-weakened trees.
  • Santa Ana winds on east-facing ridges and canyon edges.
  • Pests: invasive shothole borers have spread through Southern California and attack many common landscape trees. See UC IPM for signs to watch for.

Mission Viejo's city forester rules

Mission Viejo's municipal code (Chapter 14.30, §14.30.050) makes it unlawful to plant, prune, remove, cut or otherwise disturb any tree or shrub on a public street, park or other city property without first getting written permission from the city forester. That includes parkway trees in front of homes. The city's landscaping standards (§9.27.045) also state that removing healthy, shade-providing, aesthetically valuable trees is discouraged.

The city-forester permit covers public trees. For a tree fully on private property, ask the City before removal; most neighborhoods are in HOAs with their own rules. See South OC tree permits.

Fire season

Mission Viejo is an OCFA member city. Homes on slopes and greenbelt edges should follow OCFA's vegetation management guidance.
