Stump Grinding in South Orange County
A stump left after a removal is a trip hazard and gets in the way of new landscaping. We connect you with licensed local pros who grind stumps below grade and clean up.
Referral service. Work is done by independent CSLB-licensed providers.

Grinding vs. full stump removal
Grinding chews the stump down below the soil line with a rotating cutter wheel, leaving the deeper roots to break down in place. It is the usual choice for lawns, planting beds and new sod. Full removal digs out the root ball and is mostly used where a foundation, pool or hardscape is going in. Tell the provider what the spot will be used for, because that sets how deep the grind needs to go.
Before the grinder shows up
- Call 811 (DigAlert in Southern California) so underground utilities are marked. Ask whether the provider handles the ticket.
- Mark sprinkler heads and lines near the stump; grinding will cut them.
- Check gate width. Many grinders fit through a standard side gate, but not all.
- Decide what happens to the grindings: leave as mulch, backfill the hole, or haul away.
Stump grinding costs
Published ranges run about $100 to $500 per stump (Joylawn, Orange County) and $150 to $600 (Tree Doctor USA, California). Diameter, hardwood vs. palm, depth and access drive the price, and extra stumps on the same visit usually cost less each. See the cost guide.
Licensing to ask about
In California, stump grinding on a job worth $1,000 or more (labor and materials), or a smaller job that needs a permit or uses hired workers, has to be done by a contractor licensed by the CSLB (CSLB on the $1,000 minor-work limit). For tree work that usually means the C-49 Tree and Palm classification, which CSLB created in 2024 to replace the older D-49 Tree Service class (existing D-49 holders may keep working under it), or the C-27 Landscaping classification. Before anyone starts, look the license number up on CSLB's free license check and ask for a certificate of insurance that shows liability and workers' compensation coverage.
Areas covered: San Clemente, Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, San Juan Capistrano, Mission Viejo.
Frequently asked questions
How deep does a stump get ground?
It depends on what comes next. Turf needs less depth than a spot being replanted with a new tree. Agree on depth in writing before work starts.
Will the roots keep growing after grinding?
Some species can sprout from remaining roots. Ask the provider whether your species is likely to resprout and how they handle it.
