Palm Tree Trimming in South Orange County

Palms line coastal streets and HOA entries across South OC. Dead fronds and seed pods are a fall hazard and a fire risk. We connect you with licensed local pros who trim palms safely.

Referral service. Work is done by independent CSLB-licensed providers.

Common palms in South OC yards

  • Mexican fan palm (Washingtonia robusta): very tall and skinny, with a "skirt" of dead fronds that builds up if it is not cleaned.
  • Queen palm: softer, feathery fronds and heavy seed clusters; a common yard and pool palm.
  • Canary Island date palm: thick trunk, heavy spiny fronds, often shaped into a "pineapple" cut at the top of the trunk.

What a palm trim should and should not include

  • Remove dead and drooping fronds, seed pods and flower stalks.
  • Avoid over-trimming, the so-called "hurricane cut" that leaves only a few green fronds at the top. Green fronds feed the palm.
  • Clean or sterilize saw blades between Canary Island date palms. Fusarium wilt spreads on tools and has no cure, so ask how blades are cleaned.
  • No climbing spikes on palms that are only being trimmed. Spike wounds stay in the trunk.

Palm trimming costs

An Orange County contractor's 2026 guide lists routine Mexican fan palm cleaning at about $100 to $300 per palm and Canary Island date palms at about $350 to $900 (Joylawn). Height is the main driver. More ranges: cost guide.

Palms, wind and fire

A dry palm skirt is fuel. OCFA's vegetation management guidance asks homeowners to clear dead vegetation and keep plants spaced and pruned around the home. Palms near the house, roof or a slope edge are a good place to start.

Licensing to ask about

In California, palm trimming on a job worth $1,000 or more (labor and materials), or a smaller job that needs a permit or uses hired workers, has to be done by a contractor licensed by the CSLB (CSLB on the $1,000 minor-work limit). For tree work that usually means the C-49 Tree and Palm classification, which CSLB created in 2024 to replace the older D-49 Tree Service class (existing D-49 holders may keep working under it), or the C-27 Landscaping classification. Before anyone starts, look the license number up on CSLB's free license check and ask for a certificate of insurance that shows liability and workers' compensation coverage.

Frequently asked questions

How often should palms be trimmed?

Many palms are cleaned once a year. Dana Point, for example, trims its own city palms once a year. Fast-growing fan palms near roofs or walkways may need more frequent attention.

Can palms near power lines be trimmed by any crew?

No. Work near overhead lines needs line-clearance qualified workers. Contact your utility about trees touching service or power lines.
